Strata Bag crochet pattern - digital or hard copy

The Strata Bag is a contemporary design that is easy to crochet and is a great introduction to crochet bags.

Strata is crocheted in rows to create just one piece of fabric that is then slip stitched together. A sewn lining can be added (not essential) to bring more structure and stability, and you can add whichever handles you prefer.

The same pattern is used whether you are working with a aran or chunky weight yarn. Using aran weight will create a standard handbag size, while chunky creates an over-sized bag that can carry a laptop.

Using a simple two-row repeat of Herringbone half trebles and double slip stitches, you will make this bag in no time at all.

Yarns: 

Aran weight  WoolyKnit Aran Weight Cone; 100g/ 154m/ 168yds; 100% British Wool. This wool comes on 400g cones. Sample used 300g/ 462m/ 505yds in shade 'Rust Tan'.

Chunky weight  Iinouiio Chunky; 100g/ 104m/ 113yds; 97% wool, 3% other fibres; 80% total recycled fibre content. This yarn comes on 500g cones and in 50g balls. Sample used 550g/ 572m/ 626yds in shade 'Singing in the Blues'

Yarn substitutes: Something with the same or very similar meterage.  It can be a different blend but be aware that meterage requirements will change if you substitute yarns.  

Materials:
4mm hook (US G/6) for aran weight bag

5mm hook (US H/8) for chunky weight bag

2 x place markers & 1 x stitch marker (to secure stitch when putting project aside)

Tapestry needle 

Bag handles/straps

2 sets of metal poppers - optional

Magnetic closure - optional

Cotton/ linen material and medium weight interfacing (70cm/ 27.5" x 40cm/ 15.75" for aran weight bag & 100cm/39.5" x 50cm/ 19.5" for chunky weight bag), sewing machine and thread to sew bag liner - optional

Tension/Gauge: 

Aran weight - 20 sts and 16 rows over 10cm/ 4"

Chunky weight - 15.5 sts and 12 rows over 10cm/ 4"

Bag Dimensions:

Aran weight - 32cm high x 24.5cm wide x 8cm deep/ 12.5" high x 13" wide x 3.25" deep

Chunky weight - 42cm high x 33cm wide x 10cm deep/ 16.5" high x 9.75" wide x 4" deep

I now operate a ‘pay what you can’ scale for my electronic/downloadable single patterns.  I usually charge £5 for these patterns and to encourage access for all crafters, these are now available on a scale of £3 - £7 and you chose what you can afford within that scale.

Strata Bag is an eight-page document.  If you are purchasing a printed copy, it is A4 sized with large, clear text.

Weights given are approximated to provide the best estimate for postage and packaging costs only.

Product materials, sourcing and PoM Rating

This product was originated by me at Fay Dashper-Hughes Designs.  I work with a local printer and they help me to source recycled paper for my patterns.  This pattern is printed on paper that is 50% recycled coffee cups and 50% virgin fibre.

The P&P costs applied are very transparent.  No additional costs are added on, you simply pay for the cost of packaging and the cost of postage.  I don't offer free P&P because what that usually means is that the cost of P&P has been added to the cost of goods.  I think it is better to assume that my customers aren't daft and would rather have transparent P&P costs than the pretence of 'Free P&P' with inflated prices on the items that they are buying.
