Little festive sock patterns

Fay Dashper-Hughes

Knitting patterns for the Festive socks

I wanted to create this sock pattern so that they could be filled with lavender and hung in my stash or placed in my WIP bags.  Christmas then approached and I felt the need to make some festive coloured ones and then decided that they also needed some colour work too!

There are two sizes available and for each size they are designed as cuff down socks knitted using double pointed needles (DPNs).  These are great for using up stash sock yarn and you can mix and match as many colours as you like.  If you don't want to do the colour work, just do the number of rounds suggested in the colour of your choice and don't move up a needle size.

Little Festive Socks

Notes: Both sizes are knitted cuff down using DPNs.

Yarn: I used Lang Yarns Jawoll (75% wool and 25% nylon aqnd 50g/210m) in three colours:

Cream - shade 94

Green - shade 198

Red  - shade 61

Yarn substituting: You could use any 4 ply yarn.  This is great for using up scraps and destashing.

Materials:  2.5mm DPNs, 10g of yarn for the midi sock and 8g for the mini, tapestry needle for sewing in ends.   Colour work can pull your knitting in and so you may want to move up to 3mm DPNs for the colour work rounds.

I also knitted an i-cord to hang the stockings from but this requires more yarn.

Gauge/Tension:  9 stitches and 11 rows over 2.5cm.

Size:  The maxi sock is 8.5cm from the cuff down to the back of the heel and 9.5cm from the back of the heel to the toe. The mini sock is 7cm cuff down to back of heel and 7cm back of heel to toe.

Time to make: This is really quick to crochet and only takes about an hour or so to make each one.

Stitches and abbreviations:

st(s) - stitch(es)

K - knit

P - purl

K2tog - knit 2 sts together

P2tog - purl 2 together

Rep - repeat

ssk - slip, slip (knitwise) then knit them together

RS - right side

WS - wrong side

PM - place marker

To make the mini sized Little Festive Socks:

Cast On: 24 sts and divide between three needles (8 sts on each) and join to start working in the round. Make sure that your stitches aren't twisted.

Cuff:

Round 1: *K1, P1, rep from * to end of round to create a 1 x 1 rib.

Rounds 2 - 5: Rep round 1.

Rounds 6 - 19 - Working from Chart A, knit rounds 6-19.  You can change colours and you may want to move up to 3mm DPNs where you are knitting the stranded colour work as this tends to be tighter.  I didn't because the projects are so small, but you may wish to.

Heel flap:

Work the next 12 sts onto one DPN and work back and forth in rows as follows:

Row 1: K2, *Sl 1, K1 rep from * to end of row. (RS)

Row 2: Sl 1, P to end of row. (WS)

Row 3: *Sl 1, K1 rep from * to end of row.

Row 4: Sl 1, P to end of row.

Rep rows 3 and 4, 3 more times.

Rep row 3 once more.

Heel turn:

Row 1: Sl 1, P6, P2tog, P1 and turn. (11 sts)

Row 2: Sl 1, K3, ssk, K1 and turn. (10 sts)

Row 3: Sl 1, P4, P2tog, P1 and turn. (9 sts)

Row 4: Sl 1, K5, ssk, K1 and turn. (8sts)

Gusset:

Needle 1: Pick up 6 sts, PM, K6

Needle 2: K6, PM, Pick up 6sts

Needle 3: K8 (these should be from the heel flap)

Round 1:

Needle 1: Knit to last 3sts, K2tog, K1, slip PM, K6.

Needle 2: K6, slip PM, K1, ssk, K3.

Needle 3: K8

Round 2:

Needles 1-3: Knit all sts.

Rep rounds 1 & 2 three more times until 24 sts remain (8 on each needle) and continue to knit to the PM on needle 1 which then marks the start of the round from here on in.

Foot:

Working from Chart B, knit rounds 1-11.  Again, you may want to move up to 3mm DPNs where you are knitting the stranded colour work as this tends to be tighter.

Toe:

You may want to redistribute your stitches across the needles to make the decreases easier.

Round 1: Slip PM, K1, ssk, K to last 3sts before next PM, K2tog, K1, slip PM, K1, ssk, K to last 3 sts before next PM, K2tog, K1. (20 sts)

Rounds 2 - 3: Slip PM, knit all stitiches, slipping second PM.

Round 4: Rep Round 1. (16 sts)

Round 5: Knit all sts, slipping PMs.

Round 6: Rep Round 1. (12 sts)

Rearrange sts so that you have 6 sts on two DPNs with the final st as one of the end sts on one of the needles.

Cut the yarn leaving a 15cm tail and Kitchener stitch the toe to graft the two sides together.  Weave in loose ends and create a loop to hang the sock with.
